Fresno State men’s basketball freshman forward DeShawn Gory has been named Mountain West Freshman of the Week, a standout highlight by the Mountain West Conference.
A Mountain West Freshman of the Week is a conference recognition given to first-year players who have continually made immediate impacts on the court and highlights those who have adjusted quickly to the speed, physicality and overall pressure of Division-I basketball.
The 6-foot-6-inch freshman forward from Victorville, California, has quietly put together an efficient first season in a Bulldog uniform, averaging 10.9 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game. Through 18 games, Gory is shooting 49.7% from the field.
On Jan. 13, Fresno State secured a 79-69 win over the Colorado State Rams. In this game, Gory delivered yet another all-around strong performance, which led to him finishing with 14 points and 10 rebounds, recording his third straight double-double.
On Jan. 17, Fresno State secured a winning streak after taking down the Wyoming Cowboys with a 63-60 win, where Gory had 13 points, tying with David Douglas Jr. atop Fresno State’s scoring chart. Gory’s contributions on both ends of the court helped keep the Bulldogs in the lead to close out a tight win to secure a two-win week for the ‘Dogs.
Performances like these helped Gory earn Mountain West Freshman of the Week for the first time since former Fresno State forward Elijah Price won the accolade to close out the Bulldogs’ previous season.
A Mountain West Conference accolade for a first-year player like Gory comes as Fresno State looks to build momentum after finishing rough in their previous season at 6-26.
