The Fresno State men’s basketball team left home court on Saturday with what could be the beginning of a winning streak following their 63-60 win over the Wyoming Cowboys.
The Bulldogs came into the Save Mart Center riding the high of an upset victory against Colorado State in their previous game.
It was a back-and-forth contest all game, with the Bulldogs playing from behind for the majority of the contest.
David Douglas Jr. got off to a hot start, making both of his opening field goal attempts. Despite a slower second half offensively, Douglas Jr. was able to make an impact without the ball.
“And I feel like every game’s been going on, I’ve been like, finding my rhythm and really on the defensive end, trying to make sure I lock in with that,” Douglas Jr. said. “Because, as you saw today, after the first half, I didn’t really shoot that well, but just getting those stops on defense to, you know, help contribute to the win.”
In the last minute of the game, Douglas Jr. knocked down three free throws, helping ice the game for the Bulldogs.
Down the stretch of the game, Head Coach Vance Walberg was forced to make a change with Zaon Collins going out with an injury, opting to play DJ Stickman.
Stickman was able to make an impact down the stretch of the game on both ends of the floor.
In just 20 minutes, Stickman scored seven points and added two assists, two rebounds and a steal.
“I was really proud of DJ Stickman coming in, because [Leland] Walker’s a tough guard and DJ came in and I thought he did a heck of a job for us,” Walberg said.
The win gives the Bulldogs a three-win conference record, surpassing their conference record from last season when the ‘Dogs won just two games.
“I don’t care what type, I just like winning,” Walberg said. “Obviously, you’d love to have a 10 [or] 12 point lead with a minute to go, but, you know, it’s the Mountain West. You know what it’s gonna be like.”
The ‘Dogs will look for their next win when they head on the road for a mid-week matchup against the New Mexico Lobos on Jan. 21.
