The defending Mountain West baseball champions started off their conference slate with three straight losses to the University of Nevada, Reno Wolf Pack.
This was the first matchup between the Fresno State baseball team and the Wolf Pack since the Bulldogs’ 12-7 semifinal win in last year’s Mountain West Championship.
The ‘Dogs struggled to limit the Wolf Pack’s bats, who tallied 52 hits over the three-game series at Bob Bennett Stadium.
Starting pitcher Tyler Patrick took his third loss of the season on Friday night, allowing four runs on eight hits over just 3.1 innings.
The Bulldogs’ offense was able to put up runs, thanks to senior first baseman Griffen Sotomayor’s two-home run outing. Sotomayor ended the series opener with a 3-for-4 performance, totaling three RBIs.
Left-hander B.J. Rodriguez was able to enter in relief and limit the damage until a four-run eighth inning put the game out of reach.
The Wolf Pack took game one 9-4.
The Bulldogs’ offense came alive early in game two as the ‘Dogs totalled six runs in the first three innings.
Despite a four-run fifth inning from the Wolf Pack, the Diamond ‘Dogs entered the top of the seventh inning with a six-run lead.
Then the Wolf Pack exploded for nine runs, taking their first lead of the night.
The ‘Dogs put up one run in the ninth but couldn’t mount a comeback, losing 15-12.
This was the Bulldogs’ most runs in a loss since the 12-10 loss to the New Mexico Lobos on May 17, 2025.
In the series finale, the Diamond ‘Dogs were able to answer the Wolf Pack’s three early runs.
In the bottom of the third, left fielder Cam Schneider knocked in two runs with a double down the left field line, tying the game at three apiece.
The bats cooled down as the Bulldogs put together just four hits in the remaining six innings.
Nevada’s right fielder, Jacob Doyle, hit two home runs in the final three innings, making the game out of reach by the final frame.
The Wolf Pack took game three, 9-4, sweeping the opening conference series. This was the Wolf Pack’s second straight series sweep of the Diamond ‘Dogs, dating back to last May.
In Sunday’s finale, Sotomayor was hit in the head by a pitch in the first inning and was immediately taken out of the game. No word has been said on his status for the Bulldogs’ next game.
The ‘Dogs now turn their attention to California State University, Northridge, for a Tuesday night matchup at Bob Bennett Stadium. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. as the Bulldogs will look to end their seven-game losing streak.
