The No. 14 Fresno State water polo team defeated the No. 20 Pacific Tigers 13-10 on senior day. The Bulldogs finish the season at 14-9 and 5-1 in conference play.
The Bulldogs honored seven seniors before the game: Alana Lillie, Hailey Andress, Alice Johsnon, Megan Cranley, Aryanah Tellez, Susanna Martinez and Ashley Williams.
However, it was the Bulldog freshmen who propelled the team to victory before the start of the Golden Coast Conference (GCC) Tournament.
Riaan Bryant and Charley Stephens totalled nine of the 13 goals for the Bulldogs. Andress and Martinez potted goals in their final regular-season games with the Bulldogs. Freshman goalie Katelyn Mobley made 13 saves on the day and tallied five steals.
A six-goal third period, four coming from Stephens and Bryant, put the game out of reach down the stretch.
Despite a Tiger push late in the fourth period, Mobley came up with some big stops.
The Bulldogs turn their attention to the GCC Tournament, but it will face some changes, as the Santa Clara Broncos’ season was cut short due to hazing allegations.
With just six of the seven GCC teams participating, the Bulldogs secured the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye. The GCC regular-season champions, the Loyola Marymount Lions, secured the No. 1 seed for the third consecutive season.
The Bulldogs will play the winner of the No. 4 seed California Baptist Lancers and No. 5 seed Pacific Tigers quarterfinal game. The first sprint is set for noon at the Fresno State Aquatics Center.
