Softball clinches WAC Championship in San Jose

The Fresno State softball team handily defeated San Jose State 9-1 to lock up the Western Athletic Conference league title, Saturday.
Freshman pitcher Merryann Barr threw a four-hitter and allowed one run while walking five and striking out six for her sixth win of the year.
Fresno State took a 3-0 lead quickly after a half inning of play. Highlighting the inning was a two-run homer by freshman designated hitter Robin Mackin and a solo home run by sophomore first baseman Kristin Sylvester.
The Bulldogs scored two more in the third inning when Barr connected for a two-out RBI double. Mackin hit a two-out RBI double in the fourth before the squad scored their seventh run in the fifth inning, thanks to an error by the Spartans.
In the seventh, junior centerfielder Shannon Garvin hit a two-run home run to give the Bulldogs a 9-0 lead.
The Spartans managed to score one in the bottom of the seventh inning but did not score again, making the final score 9-1 to give the Bulldogs the win and the WAC championship — its third consecutive title in the past 11 years.
Sophomore second baseman Jenna Cervantez made school history by becoming the first Bulldog to participate on three double plays in the game.
The WAC Championship for the Bulldogs is the third straight and ninth in the last 11 years. Fresno State will also host the WAC Tournament, beginning Thursday.
The Bulldogs will be the tournaments No. 1 seed.
