Former Fresno State ace Matt Garza was awarded the Minor League Pitcher of the Month Award by the Minnesota Twins for his performance during the first month of the season.

Garza, who pitches for Class A Fort Myers, was 3-0 with a 0.74 earned run average in five starts with the team.

The 22-year-old also struck out 34 batters and held opponents to a .165 batting average during the month of April.

The former Bulldog signed with the Twins last year after the Twins selected him as their first overall pick. Garza entered the draft and left school as a junior, and is rated as the 10th best prospect in the Minnesota organization.

He is also touted as having the best curveball among the Twins’ minor league organizations.

Garza put up a 3.07 ERA in just over 108 innings pitched a year ago, striking out 120 and walking only 37 on his way to a 6-5 record.
