Women's Basketball Preview

Fresno State (16-5, 8-1) at Hawaii (13-7, 4-5)

Point Guard

There are not many negative things you can say about Fresno State’s Mirenda Swearengin. Her one weakness may be her breakaway lay-ups. Bulldogs head coach can definitely live with that, considering Swearengin’s other strengths. Swearengin can hit the jumper, break the press with her dribble, and pass with some of the best point guards in the nation. She also averages 13.4 points per game, along with a team-leading 31.6 minutes played per game.

Swearengin’s opposition is likely to be Amy Kotani. The sophomore is averaging 2.1 points per game and will have a tough time handling the versatile Swearengin.

Guards

It doesn’t matter who, just pick any starting guard from Fresno State and they have been unstoppable of late. Chantella Perera has been scoring at an increased rate, scoring 21 and 13 points in consecutive games against Boise State and Idaho. The opposing teams’ top scorer on the year usually isn’t the top scorer at the end of the game if Jasmine Plummer is guarding her. Plummer steals and blocks like a pro, and is very adept at passing. Her versatility will be huge on the road against Hawaii.

The best Hawaii has to offer is senior Amy Sanders. She is a very solid scorer and athlete, but lacks the supporting cast to allow her to break out against the Bulldogs.

Forwards

Fresno State has two players that can play inside or out in Amy Parrish and Brittani Green. Parrish is the teams leading scorer at 15.7 points per game. Her game is made that much better because so much talent surrounds her. Green is great with her back to the basket and has found a trademark shot with a jumper from the elbow. Both Parrish and Green can rebound, dribble and pass, making it tough for opponents to double-team any one player.

Brittani Grice is one of the tougher opponents for the Bulldogs. Her height can cause problems both offensively and defensively. The junior stands 6’4” tall and averages 11.6 points per game and 8.1 rebounds per game.
