Celebrating the new wine season

According to French tradition, the third Thursday of every November is the day to celebrate the first release of the new wine harvest. Fresno State honors that tradition with its yearly event Le Vin Nouveau.

The Fresno State Winery department will reveal three new wines: Nouveau Blanc, Nouveau Rouge and Vin D’une Nuit or “wine for a night” at the 4th annual event. Nouveaus differ from regular wines such as chardonnay or merlot in that they are meant to be consumed immediately after purchase and not stored, winery student assistant Kristen Westerfield said.

The event begins today at 5:30 p.m. at the Fresno State Winery and features food and wine demonstrations by Executive Chef Frederick Clabaugh from Tenaya Lodge at Yosemite and Fresno State Winemaster Ken Fugelsang. Westerfield said the event will also feature a raffle and French music provided by local radio station KFSR.

Admission costs $10 general public and $5 for students, faculty and staff. The cost covers the food and three free wine tastes. Additional wine tastes can be purchased in the form of scrip, which will be sold at 50 cents.

The winery department will be selling the three new wines along with its 2004 Chardonnay.

Westerfield said the event usually caters to about 300 people. Free parking will be provided in lot Q, west of the viticulture and enology facilities.
