Students Choreograph "Tangents"

Fresno State’s University Dance Theatre has been working on its performance “Tangents” since the first week of school. The student choreographed dance production features a variety of dance styles including hip-hop, jazz, modern, ballet and Hawaiian.

The University Dance Theatre is a class offered at Fresno State. This semester’s class of 41 students was broken into four groups that will be performing a total of 21 different pieces for the productions this week.

“One of the main reasons this class exists is to force students to explore new options and allow dancers to discover themselves and grow in that sense,” said class instructor Kenneth Balint.

Balint said he gave students their assignments and broke them into groups during the first week of school.

From there, the students were free to choreograph their performances any way they liked with four scheduled critique performances among the class.

“I haven’t had to push this year’s groups because they have been pushing themselves,” Balint said.

There will be a total of four performances, two on Thursday and Friday at 8 p.m. and two on Saturday at 2 and 8 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased at the University Box Office for $5 each.
