It wasn’t a dominating weekend for the Fresno State baseball team, but the Bulldogs held off San Jose State for three straight games.

Fresno State won two of the games by one run each, and claimed a 10-4 win on Friday in a game that was tense until the eighth inning.

With the sweep, the Bulldogs boosted themselves into a three-way tie for second place in the Western Athletic Conference. Fresno State (25-25, 11-10 WAC) is tied with Nevada and Hawaii, two games behind first-place Rice.

San Jose State (24-22, 11-13) came into the series tied for second place with Hawaii but is now in fifth.

In Sunday’s series finale, the Bulldogs trailed 6-3 in the top of the fourth inning before coming back to take the 7-6 victory.

The 6-3 margin didn’t last long, as Fresno State’s Todd Sandell and Kent Sakamoto each drew walks to load the bases in the bottom of the fourth before Nick Moresi hit a three-run double to center field to tie the game.

The Bulldogs picked up the eventual winning run in the seventh when Brian Lapin doubled to knock in Steve Susdorf.

Brandon Miller (2-3) pitched three innings of no-hit baseball in relief to earn the win.

The Bulldogs used five relievers after starter Michael Cooper gave up five runs (three earned) in three innings. Rudy Quinonez earned the save with one and two-thirds innings pitched. He gave up one hit and had a strikeout.

The Bulldogs won Saturday’s game 5-4 after right fielder Chase Moore hit a two-run double in the ninth to end the game.

Eddie Romero pitched the final one and one-third innings for the win.

The Bulldogs have a chance to help their own cause beginning Thursday with the start of a three-game series at Hawaii.
