The Fresno State softball team fared well in its first games of the season at the Kajikawa Classic in Arizona, ending the tournament on a three-game winning streak.

With a 2-1 victory over Cal State Northridge on Sunday, the Bulldogs (3-2) were able to salvage a respectable record in a tournament with the Nation’s No. 4 and No. 13 teams, Northwestern and Texas A&M, respectively.

After rough appearances in the Bulldogs’ first two games against Northwestern and Texas A&M, pitchers Robin Mackin and Merryann Barr bounced back with good efforts in the final three games against Northwestern State, New Mexico and Northridge.

In Sunday’s finale, the Bulldogs put together a two-run seventh inning to overcome a 1-0 deficit by the Matadors. Mackin’s two-out single drove in Kristin Sylvester for the winning run.

Mackin also got the win for the Bulldogs in the circle, relieving Barr to throw two and a third scoreless innings, including four strikeouts.

Before Fresno State returns home from Arizona for its home-opener, the Bulldogs will remain on the road for a one-night double-header at Santa Clara.
