Kristen Rigby, communications major, settles into a couch in the Student Union to start studying. The library's lack of space has drawn students to other study areas on campus.

The University Student Union and the Coffeehouse and Pub are quickly emerging among the most popular study locations on campus, according to an informal Collegian survey.

Many cite the comfortable aesthetics and central location as major factors in their choice of study areas. Bertha Tafolla, Spanish major, said that she frequents the student union.

“I can concentrate here. It’s comfortable. In fact, it’s more comfortable and has more space than most other places,” Tafolla said. “It’s also close to a lot of my classes; most of them are in the buildings around here.”

Sophomore business major Jacque Ritchie also studies in the student union from time to time. She has similar reasoning as Tafolla.

“For me, it’s on the way to every class,” Ritchie said.

The pub is quickly emerging as even more of a hotspot not only for students to study. Some say it has more of a social atmosphere.

Senior construction management major Dave Landelfeld said he is a regular customer in the morning hours, but that it isn’t conducive to a good study ethic. “It’s too loud for me here. I mostly just read the paper,” Landelfeld said. “I’m a big fan of the free New York Times.”

But some students are disappointed in the facilities available. Roy Benjamin, a junior criminology major, expressed his dissatisfaction with the facilities available to students.

“I used to go to the library, but now with all the construction, it’s worthless to me. It’s so hard to get anything done there,” Benjamin said. “And because the library is pretty much closed, the student union got packed.”

Benjamin said he holds some tentative faith in the library development. “I guess it’s going to better in five years when the library’s finished, but right now there’s not too much you can do about it.”

The library expansion project will provide the building with a café, a formal reading room, and office space.
