Men's Basketball Preview

Ryan Tubongbanua / The Collegian
Fresno State’s Donovan Morris will need to be on his game when the Bulldogs travel to Boise State on Saturday. Morris is expected to be needed behind the three-point line against the Broncos. |
POINT GUARD
Walk-ons Ajay Riding and Jeff Jackson got significant playing time in a blow-out win against Idaho but that will not likely be the case against Boise State, a team head coach Steve Cleveland said is very similar to his. Kevin Bell had a solid night with seven rebounds, nine assists and no turnovers.
Boise State’s Eric Lane has a slight height advantage over Bell and is a sharp-shooter from three-point territory and also ranks sixth in the WAC in assist-to-turnover ratio. Lane produces more on offense as the second-leading scorer on the team but Bell leads the conference in assists.
WING
Donovan Morris and Ja’Vance Coleman will have their hands full with the Bronco’s biggest offensive threat, Coby Karl. Karl blazed Nevada with a career-high 32 points and followed his offensive output with 25 against Idaho. Karl can also shoot the three, rebound and pass the ball as he is averaging 4.8 rebound and 4 assists.
Coleman has been hot from three-point range; the scored 22 points against Idaho and 18 of them were from three-pointers. Morris and Quinton Hosley can also pull the trigger and if the Broncos don’t close out, the Bulldogs can burn them like they did the Vandals with a 53.4 percent shooting.
Looks like the game will be a shoot-out of Karl and Coleman have their way.
CENTER
Hector Hernandez has been providing quality minutes for the ‘Dogs. In 20 minutes against the Vandals, Hernandez had five rebounds and showed his range with a three on his way to nine points. He is tied for 10th in blocks in the WAC and 11th in rebounding.
Renato Cesar stepped up his play last week with eight points and was stronger down in the post as he went to the line for eight free-throw attempts.
Both will have to deal with the Bronco’s 6-9 Tez Banks, who is averaging 7.5 points and 4.9 rebounds.
