The Bulldog baseball team was defeated in the third game of their series against Cal Poly.

Fresno State rallied in the ninth inning, taking the lead but ultimately losing due to a Cal Poly home run in the bottom of the inning.

Fresno State scored early against the Mustangs, scoring one run in the first inning. The Bulldogs added two more runs in the second with a single followed by a triple from freshman Erik Wetzel.

Right-handed starter Andy Underwood was forced to deal with a bases-loaded situation in the second inning and gave up two solo home runs in his debut. He pitched six innings and allowed two runs with five strikeouts before being removed after throwing more than a hundred pitches.

The Mustangs managed to score in the seventh thanks to several walks and a wild pitch giving them a 7-5 lead.

The Bulldogs rallied in the ninth to briefly take the lead but the Mustangs retook the game with a homer in the bottom of the inning to end the game with a final score of 8-7.

In Sunday's finale, the Bulldogs out-hit the Mustangs by a total of 15 to 11. In fact, for the series, Fresno State out-hit Cal Poly 31 to 27 for the entire series.

The loss brought the Mustang’s series record against the Bulldogs to 3-0 – the same record as last year’s series.

In Friday's game against the Mustangs, it was a grand slam by Cal Poly's first baseman, Jimmy Van Ostrand. The blast came off of Bulldogs ace Doug Fister, who bypassed a shot with the Yankees to finish his senior season with Fresno State.

Fister had nine strikeouts in five innings pitched on what was a very chilly evening in San Louis Obispo.
