Power for production

As the voice of the students in her department, the Associated Students senator for the college of Science and Mathematics realized what power AS has as she began her second semester in the position.
“Last semester I was testing the water, but this semester I want to be more productive,” Melissa Gushiken said.
Gushiken sits on the Academic Committee and tries to help with “any academic issues students may have.”
“I try to get people to apply for scholarships, special projects or research. I also hope to help the Pre-med club get some money from AS soon.”
Gushiken grew up in Huntington Beach. She graduated from Clovis High where she was involved in student government and a cheerleader.
She is a graduating senior majoring in chemistry and wants to go into pharmacy.
“I have wanted to do this since I was in sixth grade. My goal is to go to pharmacy school at the University of Pacific in Stockton.”
Gushiken had only one opponent when she ran for her position last spring. She said it was fun to campaign because her friends helped her.
Now she believes everyone should join. “Not only because of the yellow parking permit the senators get,” she said. “But to make a difference, be involved and be heard.”
Gushiken likes to participate in the different AS functions. She enjoys the diversity and being able to meet people and make friends from outside her major.
“You know what? AS makes you feel warm and fuzzy,”Gushiken said.
