Fresno State lands record 14 on All-WAC academic team

A record number of Bulldog athletes have been honored as Academic All-WAC team selections. To qualify for the distinction a student athlete must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA and be considered a significant member of their team. Among the 14 Bulldogs being recognized are starters Tyrone Culver, Joe Fernandez, Garrett McIntyre, Bryson Sumlin and Ryan Wendell along with special teams standout Kyle Goodman. Fresno State’s previously record for Academic All-WAC players under current football coach Pat Hill was 12 in 2002. Last season eight athletes were recognized.

Baseball kicks off season with annual alumni game

The Bulldog baseball team will kick off its season with the annual Alumni Game on Saturday, Jan. 21.

Players that have appeared in the game in the past include Steve Hosey, Lance Shebulut and current pitching coach Bobby Jones ,in addition to more recent players like Ben Fritz, Richie Robnett and Matt Garza. If available, the starting pitcher for the Alumni Team will be Jeff Weaver. The game begins at 11 am and will be the only one before the team hits the road for two consecutive weeks. In other baseball news, third baseman Beau Mills has been named a “Collegiate Baseball” third-team All-American player. Mills tied for eighth in the nation last season with a Fresno State freshman record of 22 homeruns – the most in the WAC. The Bulldog baseball team also consists of five players who have been previously drafted by Major League teams. Topping the list is 6'8" right-hander pitcher Doug Fister, who turned down a sixth-round draft offer from the New York Yankees to finish his degree at Fresno State.

Women's basketball cleans up Vandals 76-57

After a quiet game earlier this week in a win against Louisiana Tech, senior Amy Parrish led the Bulldogs with 23 points against Idaho last night. The Bulldogs improved their record to 12-4 overall while improving their WAC division leading record to 4-0. Idaho possesses the nation's leading scoring duo in Emily Faurholt and Leilani Mitchell, but the Vandal duo was held to just a combined 27 points. With the win over Idaho, Fresno State continues its hot January, going undefeated in all five of its games in the month.

Fresno State will return to the Save Mart Center for a home game on Saturday as it hosts Hawaii in a Western Athletic Conference game. The Warriors will come into the game with a 10-4 overall record while they are below .500 thus far in WAC play with a 1-2 record.
