Men’s basketball pulls out a surprise win against Iowa State

Ja’Vance Coleman’s 20 second-half points sparked the Bulldogs to 11-0 and 18-0 runs to take a victory over Iowa State 84-77 on Saturday.

The win came after a 16-point loss to Buffalo on Wednesday and ends the longest road trip for the Bulldogs this season.

The loss gave Iowa State just its second loss in 24 nonconference home games under current coach Wayne Morgan.

Sharp shooting was a key factor in the win as the Bulldogs were 7 of 10 from beyond the three-point line in the second half.

Still, Coleman’s 20 points didn’t make him the team’s leading scorer. That honor went to Quinton Hosley as he scored 22. He also grabbed 10 rebounds.

Fresno State’s next game is at the Save Mart Center against CS Northridge on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Wrestlers finish 38th out of 52-team field in Las Vegas Invitational

Fresno State had two wrestlers make the round of 16 at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas invitational. The two were Charles Jones and Greg Gifford.

Jones won his first two matches before dropping a close 4-1 decision to the 157-pound No. 1 wrestler in the country, Alex Tirapelle.

Gifford also won his first two matches for the Bulldogs to make the top 16. He started the tourney with an 8-2 decision over Duke’s Dan Tulley and advanced again after a 12-6 win over Nate Buys of Augustana.

Fresno State begins dual season next weekend, when the Bulldogs host Wyoming, which is also a member of the Western Region. The Bulldogs beat the Cowboys last season 35-11 in Laramie.
