George Lopez is coming to the Save Mart Center
George Lopez is a Mexican- American
comedian, actor, entertainer and star of the self-titled ABC sitcom “The
George Lopez Show.” His talent has taken him to the top of the entertainment
industry.
Lopez’s stand-up performances sell-out coast to coast. According
to his Web site, he sells out venues that seat up to 42,000 people.
Lopez grew up in the San Fernando Valley near Los Angeles. He began his
stand-up comedy there and became well liked by the Latino community for
his satirizing of Mexican-American life and culture in the United States.
He was approached in 2000 by actress Sandra Bullock who asked him to produce
and star in a comedy TV show. According to his Web site, “Bullock
was concerned about the lack of Latino-oriented sitcoms on American television
and pushed to get a sitcom on television that starred Latinos but wasn’t
exclusively about the Hispanic American community.” ABC began airing
the show in 2002.
In the meantime his popularity as a stand-up comedian continued to grow
and like many well-known comedians his acts are released on CD and he
performs them as stand-up routines. His most recent release “Team
Leader” received great public acclaim and was nominated for a 2004
Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album, according to his Web site.
His other CD titled “Right Now Right Now” came out in 2001
and his autobiography titled “Why You Crying” was entered
into the New York Times Bestseller’s top twenty.
On top of his stand-up success, Lopez also has a successful sitcom that
is executively produced by movie star Sandra Bullock and Bruce Helford,
who worked on “The Drew Carey Show” and “Roseanne.”
He has also worked as a cast member and commentator for HBO’s “Inside
the NFL” for the 2003-2004 season, he appeared in Miramax/Dimension
2005 film “Shark Boy and Lava Girl” and he has hosted the
Latin Grammy Awards twice and co-hosted the Emmy Awards.
Lopez also appeared on an episode of “Punk’d” on July
3, 2005. Ashton Kutcher tricked him into believing construction workers
were tearing his house down because most of the buildings were built without
a permit.
Behind the spotlight Lopez battles a genetic disease that causes kidney
malfunction and in April 2005 he received a kidney transplant from his
wife Ann and appears to be healthier, according to his Web site.
This Saturday, Nov. 4, he will try to continue that success at the Save
Mart Center at 8 p.m.
