'Dogs prepare for WAC

The Bulldogs beat first-place Hawaii 1-0 Sunday and moves into a log-jam with Nevada, Utah State and San Jose State for second place.

The win came after a disappointing loss to San Jose State. The Bulldogs dropped their last home game of the season 1-0 to the Spartans Friday night at Bulldog Stadium.

The last home game also marked senior night for Koleen Anderson, Barbara Davis, Kortney Lewis and goalkeeper Chelsea Mays.

At the 87th minute mark, San Jose State’s Jennifer Guadagnolo found a loose ball and chipped the game winning shot past Bulldog keeper Angie Larsen.

“We played hard but didn’t finish our opportunities. San Jose played hard and they found their opportunity,” said head coach Steve Springthorpe.

The Bulldogs dominated in shot attempts, taking 11 over the Spartans’ eight.

Opportunity for Fresno State came about 10 minutes into the second half when forward Cortney Sobrero took a high shot that was punched over the Spartan net by goalkeeper Adrienne Herbet.

The corner kick, taken by forward Lewis, ended up again at the feet of Sobrero who took a shot that went over the Spartan goal.

“We were confident going in but it just wasn’t our day,” Sobrero said.

The Bulldogs committed 11 fouls on the night.

Fresno State will take a 4-2-1 conference record into Boise, Idaho for their 11th WAC tournament appearance.

“We are a young team so this will be a learning experience,” said Sobrero. “We just need to take care of business.”
