"Future of news," today
Newspaper editors and writers
gather today in the Satellite Student Union to discuss the future of news.
The 2005 Roger Tatarian Journalism Symposium’s keynote speaker is
Gary Pruitt, who is chairman, president and CEO of the McClatchy Company.
The company owns the Fresno and Sacramento Bees, among other papers, and
is one of the fastest-growing newspaper chains in a country where the
medium is on the decline.
“We seem to be in a changing news landscape,” Pruitt said
Thursday. “With the emergence of the Internet so much content has
become digital, mobile and interactive.”
Pruitt said new technology is offering more choices, which is fragmenting
audiences.
“The sense that the mainstream media is in control will be eroded,”
he said.
Pruitt said the McClatchy Company is staying on top by making sure its
news is relevant and by being “more adept at the Internet than our
peers.”
Other speakers today represent the Orange County Register, the San Jose
Mercury News and the Visalia Times-Delta.
The event begins at 9 a.m. and is expected to last until noon.
