Most college students know about
www.myspace.com and www.facebook.com.
For some, it’s a daily routine to visit the Web sites that allow
them to communicate with friends through such features as blogs and private
messages.
But not many know about UPeers (University Peers), a special feature that
can be accessed through the new campus Web site www.bulldog-connection.com,
which is aimed at and limited to freshmen as an online guide to Fresno
State.
“Right now, not a lot of students are participating but what we’d
like to do is entice freshmen to join so they can have the same experience
on myspace and facebook,” said Dennis Nef, dean of undergraduate
studies and coordinator of the online program that was created to assist
students during their first year of college.
Nef, who spoke at Thursday’s Associated Students meeting, said about
one third of the freshmen population have accounts on the Web site, which
was launched at the beginning of the semester, allowing students to get
familiarized with the campus, learn about their professors, and prepare
for examinations, among other features.
“I wish we had this when we were freshmen because we are a commuter
school and this keeps us connected,” Student Affairs Senator Michael
Karbassi said.
Nef asked AS to tell fellow students about UPeers and www.bulldog-connection.com,
even though the Web sites are still under development.
In Thursday’s meeting, the student government also unanimously approved
funding for two campus organization events:
Lambda Theta Phi’s “Presentation of the Latinization of the
United States” on Oct. 6 will receive $850. The AS finance committee
approved $1,000 to the organization on Thursday of last week.
The Caduccus Pre-Medical Student Organization’s “1st Annual
Pre-Medical Conference” on Oct. 6 will get just under $1,000. The
finance committee approved $1,000 to the organization on Thursday of last
week.
