Staff Reports

The last play in the third quarter of the season opener against Weber State last week was all it took for the Bulldogs to lose their defensive captain, Garrett McIntyre.

The senior defensive end, who suffered a high-ankle sprain when two Wildcats linemen landed on his legs as he fell to the ground, will miss this week’s game against Oregon. His injury is listed as questionable.

Bulldogs head coach Pat Hill will determine later this week who will fill in for the Western Athletic Conference’s preseason defensive player of the year.

Fresno State (1-0) will play Oregon (2-0) at Autzen Stadium in Eugene Saturday.

In other Fresno State football news:

Smith keeps gaining attention

First, he became the first Bulldog in school history to return two punts for touchdowns. Now senior running back and kick return man Clifton Smith is the WAC special teams player of the week, and he also made ESPN’s Top 10 plays of the day on Sept. 10, where he was shown dancing his way through Weber State defenders for a 84-yard punt return for a touchdown.

In the Bulldogs’ 55-17 season opener win over Weber State, Smith returned three punts for 189 yards.
His average of 63 yards per return set a new NCAA record in a game for a player with 3-4 returns.

Last season, he ran back a punt return for 67 yards for a touchdown against Rice. Going into this week’s game against Oregon, Smith is one punt return for a touchdown shy of the school’s all-time record.

Moving up one spot to No. 23

With their runaway win against Weber State, the Bulldogs jumped up one spot to No. 23 in the Associated Press football poll. The move marks the third consecutive week Fresno State has been ranked in the poll.
But, the Bulldogs dropped one spot to No. 24 in the USA Today coaches poll.
