Jazz concert for relief of Katrina victims

The Fresno Art Museum, KFSR and ClearChannel Radio are holding a hurricane relief jazz concert Thursday, Sept. 8 at the Fresno Art Museum.

The event begins at 7 p.m. and admission is donation based with a recommended amount of $10 said the museum’s marketing and membership director, Nicole Gonzales. Gonzales also said she’s hoping people will keep in mind what the event is for and be generous with their donations.

Every cent that is raised will be given to the United Way of Greater New Orleans, which is a national organization that provides help for a lot of different programs.

“One-hundred percent of what they receive will be given back to the community to help aid and relieve victims,” Gonzales said.

Gonzales said the event was a collaborative effort between KFSR, a local radio station that is also providing media coverage of the event, and Armen Nalbandian, the musical director for the museum and local jazz musician. Gonzales said they came up with the idea last week and have been scrambling to get the media messaging out ever since.

The jazz concert is being held in the museum’s auditorium, which seats about 152 people, Gonzales said. It is on a first come first serve basis and they are hoping for a packed house. Nalbandian and his group Armen Nalbandian Quintet, as well as other local jazz musicians are providing the entertainment, Gonzales said.

Anyone who wishes to donate but are unable to attend the concert can send donations to:
Fresno Art Museum 2233 North First Street, Fresno 93703 labeled “Hurricane Relief Fund.”
