Transforming one day at a time

Welcome back to the fall semester at California State University, Fresno. I can’t imagine a more exciting time to be a student at Fresno State.

There’s a remarkable transformation under way at Fresno State. Your experience here is being enhanced with new buildings, new technologies and even stronger academic programs.

There are $150 million in new building projects on campus. Early next year you’ll be able to enjoy using the new West Complex/Student Recreation Center now being built next to the Save Mart Center.

In addition to a fitness and recreation focus, it also will house important community conference and educational facilities including the Lyles Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and The Leon and Pete Peters Educational Center.

Fresno State’s West Complex will be one of the best university student centers on the West Coast. The West Complex is truly your facility, and has been designed, and will be operated, to meet the needs and interests of students.

Soon Fresno State will begin a massive $91 million renovation of the Henry Madden Library. The entire front wing of the library will be demolished and rebuilt into what will be one of the finest and most modern university libraries in California. This expansion will enable us to provide the latest computer technologies, offer easier access to our rare and historical materials, and provide much improved areas for students and faculty to study, conduct research and meet.

The library staff will work hard to serve you while the demolition of the library occurs. We have developed an efficient courier service to provide library materials to you.

Of course, there will be disruptions to the campus as the front wing of the library is demolished and construction begins. I ask you to bear with us as we bring the beautiful state-of-the-art library into existence. Learn about how to use library services at www.maddenlibrary.org.

We’re also making excellent progress on the university’s comprehensive campaign for private support, the largest fund-raising program in Fresno State’s history. The campaign provides that “margin of excellence” that enables Fresno State be a great place to study and learn. You can read more about our plans at www.FresnoStateNews.com.

This will be a memorable year to be a student at Fresno State. Take full advantage of the opportunities provided by our outstanding faculty, educational programs and student services on campus. Look to become involved in service activities in our community. Take the time this semester to think about your future and how the resources of this great university can help you achieve your dreams.
