The Latin Sensations

Latin artists will spice things up at the Save Mart Center

By IRENE RODRIGUEZ

The sounds of Mexican music — mariachi, banda, cumbia and norteña — will take center stage Sunday at the Save Mart Center, as the Gira Nueva Generacion 2005 (New Generation Tour 2005) makes a stop in Fresno.

The event starts at 7 p.m.

The first Latin music concert at the Save Mart Center will feature performances by renowned artists in the world of Latin music, such as Joan Sebastian, A.B. Quintanilla & Kumbia Kings and Alicia Villarreal, among others.

“The notion was to find diverse talents who could reach different audiences. It’s regional Mexican music but with innovative elements,” said concert promoter Guillermo Rosas, of Rosas Entertainment.

And diversity was accomplished.

In a career that spans three decades, Sebastian has recorded more than 30 albums and won multiple awards. His versatility has allowed him to perform music from any genres. Because of his popularity and talent, many important artists in the Latin community have performed his songs.

A.B. Quintanilla & the Kumbia Kings is another band that has characterized itself for its versatility, creating a fusion of cumbia, hip-hop, rap and R&B in its music. The band, whose albums were nominated for the Latin Grammys, American Music Awards and Billboard Latin Music Awards, will give an energetic performance from beginning to end.

Villarreal said her show is “very Mexican but very (universally) Latin.

“We’re also changing the look, the outfits, the lighting. It will be something very special,” said Villarreal, who will be performing songs from her newest album, as well as material from her days with the band Grupo Limite.

Other artists taking the stage are Rogelio Martinez and Pablo Montero. Both singers have a few years in the music business, but have been successful with the younger audiences.

This tour will mark the singing debut of television show host Sissi.

Noelia, a Puerto Rican singer, will perform, as well as host the concert.

The opening act of the concert will be the winner of a talent contest organized by a local radio station. The winner of this contest will have the opportunity to participate for the grand prize: recording an album featuring songs written by Sebastian and produced by the leaders of the Kumbia Kings.

Ticket prices start at $30 and are on sale in www.ticketmaster.com. Tickets will also be available at the door.
