Staff Report / The Collegian

Fresno State finally got its first game in — and it was a good one as senior Jamie Southern tossed her fifth career no-hitter.

The Bulldogs scheduled opener in the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz., was canceled because of rain last weekend.

But, on Thursday, No. 21 Fresno State opened with a 5-0 win over Utah. The Bulldogs lost their second game of the day to Oregon State, 15-7.

Southern struck out 14 in the victory, walking none. The Bulldogs’ two errors kept her from a perfect game.

Junior shortstop Christina Clark, Fresno State’s all-time leading home run hitter, and sophomore catcher Nichole Willis each hit home runs and were 3 for 4 at the plate for the Bulldogs.

It was Clark’s 39th career home run.

In game two, Laura Ferreira took the mound, allowing 10 runs (seven earned) in 3 2/3 innings. Amanda Nesbitt gave up five runs in 3 1/3 innings of relief.

The Bulldogs (1-1) face Notre Dame at 4 p.m. today.
