The Fresno State baseball team gets its season underway today against Stanford at Sunken Diamond.

The Bulldogs have a difficult task ahead in facing the Cardinal. Stanford, which enters the season ranked sixth in the nation in all three major polls, holds a 70-47 lead in the all-time series between the two teams.

The Cardinal, the two-time defending Pac-10 champion, has three returning All-Pac-10 selections in catcher Donny Lucy, first baseman John Mayberry and pitcher Mark Romanczuk, as well as 2004 Pac-10 player of the year Jed Lowrie, an infielder.

But the Bulldogs’ lineup is nothing to scoff at. Coach Mike Batesole’s roster boasts returning freshman All-Americans Nick Moresi and Christian Vitters and All-WAC designated hitter David Gomez.

In tonight’s game, junior college transfer Ryan Penn will take the mound for the Bulldogs against Romanczuk. On Saturday, Brandon Miller will pitch for Fresno State, facing Stanford’s Jeff Gilmore. And in the series finale Sunday, the Bulldogs’ Matt Garza will face Greg Reynolds.
