Fresno State Head Coach Ryan McCarthy’s first Mountain West Conference matchup ends with a loss at the hands of the San Diego State Aztecs, 63-53.
The Bulldogs struggled in the first half to get much going offensively and entered halftime down 32-20.
“I just didn’t think we did a very good job in the first half of just from a focus standpoint, and showing up to win,” McCarthy said.
Through the first two quarters, the ‘Dogs shot just 23% from the floor.
Before the Aztecs could go on a big run, McCarthy opted to run a zone defense, which helped limit the San Diego State offense.
With one minute left in the game, the Bulldogs got within eight of the Aztecs.
“I thought tonight we did a much better job of, you know, just being active in that defense and making reads, and it ultimately led to some deflections for us,” McCarthy said.
Forward Avery Watkins was able to turn around from a slow first half, helping the Bulldogs get within striking distance.
Watkins led the way with 11 rebounds — six of them being offensive — also adding 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting.
As the ‘Dogs looked to go on a run, Watkins gave the Bulldogs multiple second-chance opportunities late in the fourth quarter.
“We had a little talk at halftime, and she showed up and did some really good things for us in the second half,” McCarthy said. “I’m very proud of the way she responded.”
Despite making the Aztecs work in the second half, McCarthy still wants to see more out of his team.
“I’m proud of their effort in the second half, and a moral victory, whatever we want to call it, but that’s not going to be okay moving forward.
The Bulldogs will look to get back on track at home on Dec. 20 when the Wyoming Cowgirls come to town for a mid-afternoon matchup. Tip off is set for 2 p.m.
