Students reject IRA fee referendum

With 65 percent of students voting no on the IRA fee referendum, the issue will be passed along to the campus fee advisory committee for review. They will meet on Monday in a closed meeting to discuss the fee and pass along their recommendation to University President John D. Welty, who will make the final decision. Of the 1,371 students who voted in this year̢۪s election, 1,189 voted on the IRA.

Students need to turn out for this year̢۪s general election

This week marks the 2008 student general election, which determines, among other issues, who will serve as ASI president and the ASI Senate. Also on the ballot this year is a referendum on the Instructionally Related Activity (IRA) fee, a proposal that would increase the fee from $10 to $80, with $50 of the proposed increase going toward intercollegiate athletics and the remaining $20 being allocated for the titular instructionally related activities.

Because of looming budget cuts, members from Associated Students, Inc. went to Washington, D.C. during spring break to begin talks with Congress in hopes of lowering student fees and preventing financing programs from being cut.
