Ryne, it’s a shame that we won’t be getting the benefits of the academic fee increase, but the student body is hardly to blame. If anyone should be blamed, it should be whoever’s brilliant idea it was to force us to vote on both fee increases as a single item. I have no doubts that the $20 academic fee increase would have easily passed, and the $50 athletics fee increase would have been summarily rejected. Why should we pour money into a program that’s struggled to bring our university anything but disgrace while merely giving academics a pittance?

Nope. I think those 700-some students have no idea what they’ve done. It doesn’t just go to men’s sports. If you kept yourself in the know, it would help fund US as students, too! It would have provided a little bit more money for clubs, field trips (like one coming up on the 21st to march against CSU system budget cuts), and helped got some activities going for our campus community.

Maybe if they downplayed the sports angle and focused more on the students, the result would have been a little different. It upsets me that people voted blindly thinking “Raise tuition just for sports?!?! NO WAY!”

If they did their research on how much we pay tuition in comparison to some other schools in the CSU system, you’d be grateful of how much our tuition is (EVEN IF this motion had passed). Not that this helps in the current time but the average CSU cost of tuition (living off campus) is $17,915. Would you like to know Fresno State’s? $14,935! The next highest is CSU, Stanislaus with 16,272!

I can’t stress that those 700-odd people have made a HUGE mistake without educating themselves.

Yes I am. As far as the IRA fee goes, I voted against it because I did not want to see more money being poured into football and other men̢۪s sports instead of academics. I mean, most of us are here at Fresno State to get a high quality education. If there is going to be a fee increase, it should go to academics. But, if the fee were to provide women sports such as equestrian with more money, I probably would have supported that. But just as the comment above me said, if President Welty has the authority to override our voting voices, then what is the point?

Yes. Future students will not be forced to pay the bill that Scott Johnson and John Welty incurred.
