Last year, the Fresno State football team was put in its place.

They were beaten back down to where they belong — the WAC.

The author of this comment of course, is none other than Oregon linebacker Brent Haberly (No. 42 in case you’re a Bulldogs football player looking for payback).

Following Oregon’s 37-34 escape of a victory last season, Haberly sounded off in a post-game radio interview, perhaps forgetting he would be making the trip to Fresno in less than a year.

Maybe Fresno State right guard Cole Popovich will remind him when the appropriate time comes.

Instead of criticizing the Bulldogs’ performance, Haberly probably should have been singing the praises of the PAC-10 officials, who penalized the Bulldogs 16 times for 155 yards.

Oregon’s total: six penalties for 60 yards.

All six of Oregon’s penalties were replayed on the video board, so the fans could boo in disapproval. Fresno State’s penalties replayed — zero.

It must be hard to get those cameras in the right places at the right times.

Nobody’s pointing a finger at the refs, but nobody needs to, they’ve done it themselves. As a matter of fact, following the game, PAC-10 officials in charge of the referees admitted the game was poorly officiated.

Speaking of finger pointing … Clifton Smith was the recipient of more than a couple of Oregon fans’ fingers — and no, not because he was number one in their eyes.

As “Batman” was walking towards the locker room following multiple ligament tears in his knee — head down and towel on his head — a few classy Oregon fans decided to throw a few f-bombs and middle fingers his way. What other way would you treat a visiting player whose career was put in jeopardy because of injury?

Don’t worry Clifton, you’re not the only one in the mistreated-by-Oregon-boat. Let’s just say a group of folks who traveled to watch the game in Oregon were challenged to a fight by the natives, several times.

Oregon comes to town this Saturday, and all Fresno State fans have had their fingers pointed towards the Ducks for a while now.

And no, it’s not because the Ducks are number one.
