Bucky Jonson, the backing band for the Black Eyed Peas is ready to step out into the spotlight with an album all its own.
Bucky Jonson is made up of “The Coach” Printz Board who plays keyboard, trumpet and bass, “El Cubano” George Pajon guitar, “Black Ice” Keith Harris, percussion and keyboard and “The Dirty Flautist” Tim “Izo” Orindgreff on woodwinds and guitar.
Board is the music director for the Black Eyed Peas’ current Honda Civic Tour, which kicked off Thursday night at the Save Mart Center.
Bucky Jonson’s sound should be familiar to fans, as they have written and produced many of the Peas’ hits, including the Grammy nominated “Don’t Phunk With My Heart.” But fans should not expect the band’s upcoming album to be anything like the Peas.
“It’s live. It’s more organic than anything,” Orindgreff said.
Board said, “We’re not going to be confused. Sonically, no way. Our stuff is so raw, there’s no way. It’s definitely not pop.”
Sheryl Williamson, an athletic training major, said she would be interested in an album done by producers of the Peas. “I wouldn’t expect any certain kind [of music],” Williamson said.
Harris said that motivation for the album had to do with showing people there is a band behind the Peas that has played a huge role in the Peas’ success.
“I think our motivation is to finally let people know, not only do we play for the Peas, but we’re a big sound of that,” Harris said. “It’s a great way for us to get from behind the band and have our own identity. And let people know that it’s not just the four faces in front.”
In the process of stepping out into the limelight, Bucky Jonson is searching for a female vocalist through Internet promotion and in store appearances to lend her voice to their upcoming album.
“We’re searching everywhere,” Board said. “We’re not necessarily looking for a bombshell, 36-25-36, we don’t care, color or creed. It’s just energy.”
Pajon said “She’s supposed to blow everybody away. She’s supposed to fill all gaps.”
