Phone registration falling away

Beginning with the fall 2006 registration cycle, the option to use the telephone to add or drop classes will no longer be available.

Through statistics and research, it was found that 98 percent of Fresno State students used the online web registration to sign up for their classes.

Tina Beddall, a staff member from the Registrar’s Office said about 116 students used telephone registration to sign up for classes last semester. Over 20,000 students attend Fresno State.

The telephone registration method was implemented in the early 1990s. According to Beddall, it was brought in to eliminate the use of optical scan forms and cards.

“It was a nice backup until we settled in the web registration,” Beddall said.

Beddall said because of the new telephone registration system, people standing in line at the gym to sign up for classes became a thing of the past.

In fall 2002, the major conversion to PeopleSoft Student Administration System began, but the telephone method was still in place. Beddall said it was important to continue with that option.

Beddall said that the decision to get rid of the telephone registration system was very favorable.

For students to obtain their spring 2006 grades, the telephone system will still be available until the end of June.

If students try to call the telephone system once it is down, they will hear a message informing them the only way to add or drop classes and to receive grades is using the online system.

For students who may not have access to a computer to register for classes, Beddall said laptop computers and assistance will be available on the main floor of the University Student Union April 17-28 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

There also is a computer available in the North Lobby of the Joyal Administration Building for students to use.

Last Friday, all currently enrolled students received e-mails to their Fresno State e-mail accounts informing of them of these changes.
