Vintage Days in planning process

Vintage Days is going “Out of This World,” but still needs volunteers from this one.

“We’re looking for help on all levels,” said Student Director and Casino Night Coordinator Jason Jones. Students who want to get involved, gain community service hours or even make money are encouraged to sign up.

“Students will help set up, clean up and tear down Vintage Days,” Jones said.

Currently, there are about 40 student organizations setting up fund-raising booths, and an additional 100 students working purely as volunteers.

“We’re going out to raise funds for our chapter,” said Cherella Nicholson, Parliamentartain and Ivy Leaf Reporter for Alpha Kappa Alpha. This spring they’re running a food booth, selling hot links, nachos and drinks. She added that last year “a lot of people came out and it was a success.”

Vintage Days is also a chance for many campus organizations to get their names out to the community.

“Vintage Days is the one time of the year when local community members and local businesses can come in and work with students on campus,” Jones said.

“We’re just trying to do something positive for the black community,” Nicholson said.

In addition to working food booths or setting and cleaning up, students can volunteer for work on individual committees, such as Casino Night or Boomtown Carnival.

“Subcommittee members can help with any individual events,” Jones said. This includes everything from decorating to gathering sponsors.

“We’ve done all the planning we can do and now are trying to present it to the campus,” he said.

As the Casino Night Coordinator, Jones is hiring an outside professional company to set up the tables, including craps and poker. While the gambling doesn’t involve real money, the winner of the poker tournament gets a weekend getaway in Las Vegas. There will also be other prizes, including one for the student who wins the most chips at the end of the evening.

“Casino Night is going to be awesome for students,” Jones said.

To fit in with the theme, the casino room will be transformed into Atlantis, full of blues and greens.

KidsZone, another popular attraction, will have space and alien-themed activities.

This year Vintage Days turns 31 as one of the largest and longest running student events on the west coast.

“Students leave the spring semester with a positive impression of campus life,” Jones said, “They have a lot of good memories."
