Senator comes forward for College of Social Sciences

When four Associated Students Senate seats were vacated this semester, Simon Haeder got the chance he had been waiting for since he began attending Fresno State.

Haeder, the senator for social science, took office in February. When he heard the College of Social Sciences had a vacancy he turned in the application and went for an interview with President Jennifer Reimer. After a long process and a trip to the personnel committee, the Senate took a vote and approved his appointment.

Haeder was involved in clubs before he joined Associated Students.

Haeder was involved in the residential hall association, Pi Sigma Alpha, and Pi Gamma Mu. He is still actively involved in Pi Gamma Mu and he said this is still one of his biggest projects. He is still working at recruiting members for it.

Haeder said since taking office he has started meeting with all of the department chairs and the deans of the schools in the social sciences department. He is also in the process of attending one club meeting from all of the clubs in his department.

Haeder said he wanted to get involved in AS to have a more prominent role on campus. “I felt the College of Social Sciences was kind of neglected,” he said.

That is not his biggest challenge as senator. Haeder said his biggest challenge is trying to get students involved in AS. He doesn’t feel that AS is a priority for many on campus. He wants students to be aware of what AS can do for them.

Haeder said he wants to help create a better atmosphere for students, where students can speak up for what they stand for, not what administration stands for.
