The University of Wisconsin has hired the Bulldog football team’s running back coach.
John Settle, who has coached six of Fresno State’s 13 1,000-yard rushers, has accepted the position of assistant coach at the university.
Settle has served eight seasons as Fresno State’s running backs coach.
“John will be missed,” head coach Pat Hill said in a press release. “He did a great job for us and is moving on to improve his career. I want to thank John and his family for their commitment to our program.
Eight years is a long time to be an assistant to any school. We’ve lost a lot of good coaches over the years, but I’m confidant that we will be able to attract a high-caliber coach to work with our running backs.”
Settle’s coaching career at Fresno State has been marked with a series of all-WAC players and record-breaking seasons.
Last year Settle mentored all-WAC player Wendall Mathis who rushed for a total of 1,313 yards and 15 touchdowns.
Bryson Sumlin earned second-team All-WAC honors that same season by rushing for 995 yards and 12 scores, making Fresno State one of only two schools in the nation with two running backs ranked among the national top 50.
In 2003, Dwayne Wright became the third Fresno State football player in three seasons to break the 1,000-yard mark. In addition, player Rodney Davis set the school rushing record that same year with a total of 1,586 yards.
Hill said he hopes to have a replacement for Settle by the start of spring practice in March.
