Chancellor stands by alcohol policy

Alcohol is the biggest problem affecting the CSU system and the new alcohol policy will help educate more students, according to CSU Chancellor Charles Reed.

The policy in reference is the new CSU mandate banning alcohol from on campus sporting events.

The policy will increase alcohol education and hopefully make more students aware of the effects of alcohol, Reed said during an interview on Wednesday.

Even compared to illegal substances, alcohol is still thelarger issue.

“I would say, on a scale of one to ten, hard drugs would be a two and alcohol would be a nine,” Reed said, regarding how significant of a problem each substance is.

The policy, passed on Dec. 23, 2005, affects the entire CSU system. The main focus, according to Reed, is to educate students on the effect of alcohol. One main byproduct of the new policy is ending alcohol sales at sporting events.

Fresno State is expected to lose $138,000 in alcohol sales when the policy takes effect, Thomas Boeh, Director of Athletics at Fresno State said. Reed said on Wednesday he would like to see the CSU system phase out alcohol advertising from sporting facilities, and instead turn to non-alcoholic advertising. The CSU system will make up the lost money, and the focus should be on alcohol education, Reed said.

The policy will help those abusing alcohol, Reed said.
