Sax clinic coming to campus

Sax clinic coming to campus

Six Fresno State saxophone students will have an opportunity Wednesday to get musical cues on stage from a world-renowned saxophonist.

The Fresno State Saxophone Clinic will take place Feb. 8 at the Wahlberg Recital Hall from 6-8 p.m.

The clinic will feature Douglas Masek, a recording artist and saxophone professor at UCLA and CSU Northridge and CSU Long Beach. Students who are performing include five senior music majors and one Master’s student.

Fresno State saxophone professor Alan Durst said after students perform their pieces, Masek will coach them and give them feedback on their performances.

Durst said students often refer to this type of clinic as a “Master Class,” where the atmosphere is that of a group-learning experience. Masek will not just share different ideas but allow for the students to execute those techniques on stage, giving guests the chance to learn from the performers.

Masek has been a member of South Africa’s Cape Town Orchestra as well as several other national orchestras. He has also toured nationally and worldwide and has released three solo discs.

The clinic is free to the public and attendants will receive complimentary reeds, courtesy of its sponsor.
