Fall '05 editorial staff says goodbye

Two semesters working on this paper have blessed me with an understanding of Fresno State few students know. My thanks to the administration, athletics and fraternities for supplying the news section with so much material.
To the fraternities: No, The Collegian is not biased against you. In fact, any school newspaper would be lacking without coverage of its Greeks. Of course, “if it bleeds, it leads,” so there you have it.
To athletics: Football, you’re still the most talented team in the country that no money can buy. Basketball, you will only get better. All other sports, thank you for playing.
To administration: I’ve accepted I’ll never know everything that goes on in the Thomas Building and that’s okay.
Thank you all for making this school the place it is.

Working at The Collegian for the past three semesters I’ve learned a few things.
•Media gets fed at most college sporting events
•Not all stories are worthy of a photo
•Photo requests are never given with time to spare
Although it was hard, I’m glad I stuck it out.
I’ve learned so much and hope I was able to give you some visual enjoyment while reading the paper. I can’t even explain the experiences I’ve had while working here.
Photographing the Rolling Stones and watching the most exciting game I’ve ever seen. Though our ‘Dogs came up short I will never forget being so far from home yet feeling like I was down on Sweeney Field.
A photojournalist once said, “ You create the image, I just capture it.”
Thank you for allowing me to capture so much, GO Dogs!

Although finals are at the forefront of my mind, I’m faced with a bittersweet end. Yes, I’m that much closer to graduating, but it also marks the close of my short stint as Opinion Editor.
I’ve learned a lot this semester. Contrary to what I used to think, there’s a lot more to writing an opinion piece.
The good ones are issue-focused and well written, thought-provoking and examine both sides. The bad ones, well I don’t have to say too much about those.
Among other things, I’ve learned that I can function with less sleep than I could ever imagine and doing 100 things at once is normal in the newspaper business.
I now know it is possible for a group of strangers, after coexisting in a newsroom for hours at a time, to morph into an extended family that will be hard to forget.
But who’s trying?

Sports are a huge passion of mine. So having the opportunity to cover Division-1 athletics as the sports editor at The Collegian has been quite an experience that will surely help me on my way to being a professional sports journalist one day.
I have been to football practices and press conferences. I have made phone calls to places I’ve never even heard of (Moscow, Idaho) and interviewed numerous student-athletes.
At times, it has been stressful, but very valuable.
I will always be grateful to The Collegian for sending me to the USC football game, the most exciting and memorable game I’ve ever witnessed.
Although this publication is a school paper, I have seen it evolve into a credible, noteworthy, award-winning, cutting-edge newspaper and am lucky to have been a part of it.

Being a student at Fresno State has had its ups and downs, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
It has been so much fun spending my last year here sharing other people’s stories and adventures with our readers.
There’s nothing quite like taking something that’s so important to one person or a group of people and being able to share it with everyone. It has been such an honor to work for and learn from such a great university and such great readers.
I’m going to miss everyone in The Collegian staff; especially my fellow editors and I want to wish the future staff good luck.
Finally I would like to leave behind the legacy of the street cleaner, to my beautiful sister Lindsay (Lu) Palmberg, who might be the only other student at Fresno State that appreciates them as much as I do.

I hope just like me, you’re not one of those people who need shock therapy to understand that the final exams are upon us. If you’re one of them welcome to Procrastinators Inc.
Where taking responsibility waits till the end when there is barely enough time to do a good job, but a good job must be done to avoid having your transcripts desecrated with a well-deserved F.
Procrastination also makes you appreciate nights and hate mornings. I loathe mornings because it’s the beginning of deadlines. If you wake up and discover there is no more morning, ask me if I killed it.
But the semester was fun. We may have not covered everything and you may have not agreed with our views. But I’m glad you gave us the opportunity to serve you.
Let’s do it again next semester.
Good luck with the finals.
