Football has WAC championship in sight

Both Fresno State and Louisiana Tech will be playing their final regular season game as they face each other Friday.

The Bulldogs have an opportunity to clinch a share of the WAC title, a feat not accomplished by Fresno State since 1999.

Boise State and Nevada have captured a share of the WAC title as both teams have 7-1 records. The Bulldogs are 6-1.

Men’s basketball heads out on long road trip

The men’s basketball team left Fresno on Monday and headed back east to face Buffalo today at 4 p.m.
The Bulldogs will travel to take on the Iowa State Cyclones on Saturday.

It is the second time Fresno State has faced Buffalo and Iowa State.

The Bulldogs are undefeated as they notched wins over Cal Poly and Oregon. Fresno State beat the Bulls last year 52-49 and lost to Iowa State 79-70 back in 1998.

Two volleyball players named to all-WAC team

Two members of the volleyball team were honored by the Western Athletic Conference. Junior outside hitter Alison Pitton and freshman middle blocker Kasie Spencer were the two acknowledged.

Pitton was the only player from Fresno State representing the Bulldogs on the All-WAC team. The junior was named second-team after leading Fresno State in kills and points this season. She finished the year ninth in the conference in kills, averaging 3.51 kills per game, and led the Bulldogs on the year with 302 kills.

Spencer was selected to the seven-member All-Freshman team. She set freshman records for total blocks and block assists. She was also second on the team in kills.

Wrestling inks four in early signing period

First-year wrestling coach Shawn Charles has signed four wrestlers to letters of intent in the early signing period.

Two of the signees are from California, including a local recruit. Andre Johnson is from Florida and the last recruit, Brian Martin, is from Illinois.

The local product is Josh Betancur from Buchanan High in Clovis. Betancur is currently ranked No. 1 in the state as a lightweight.

Armando Gonzalez is the other California native and hails from Gilroy.

Johnson is a state champion and will compete at either 133 or 141 pounds.

Martin, a projected 149-pounder is from Montini High School, a wrestling power in Illinois.
