AS finance committee wants more to apply for service grant

The Associated Students finance committee Thursday night discussed the possibility of making changes to the student government community grant application in order to encourage more student organizations to apply.

Chris Fiorentino of Civic Engagement and Students for Community Service spoke to the committee to suggest changes to the wording of the grant application so organizations would be more likely to apply.

He also said the grant, which is $500 and can be retrieved at the student government Web site (www.csufresno.edu/studentgov), is a way for campus organizations to build relationships with community agencies.

“Just because it hasn’t been sought after doesn’t mean it’s not needed,” Fiorentino said.

This semester, the committee awarded the Recycling Club $500 of the grants’ $2,500 in funding.

The committee also recommended listing examples of past recipients to encourage other organizations to apply.

“They don’t see any forms of examples and everything is just vague,” committee chair Esmeralda Santos said.

Fiorentino said the grant was created in spring 2004 with the help of then-AS president Molly Fagundes and then-AS vice president of finances Jennifer Reimer.

In other business, the finance committee approved the funding for the following campus events:

• $1,000 for Jumpstart’s “Author Visit: Steven Kellogg” event on March 27, 2006, and the committee will recommend the remaining $1,000 to the student government.

• $695 for Chicanos in Law’s “Law School: DAY ONE” event on Nov. 29.

• $1,000 for Los Danzantes de Aztlan’s “Christmas in Mexico” event on Dec. 4, and the committee will recommend the remaining $850 to the student government.

• $740 for Teatro T.O.R.T.I.L.L.A.’s “La Pastorela on Dec. 5 and 6.

• $860 for Student Health Science Association’s “World Aids Day” on Dec. 1.

• $725 for Es-Tu-Dios’ “Las Mananitas” on Dec. 12.
