Sikh students prepare for a night of Punjab culture

About 15 teams will be performing at Punjab Night, which showcases different cultures from India.

Fresno State’s Sikh Student Association will present Punjab Night 2005 on Nov. 19 at the Satellite Student Union. President of the Sikh Student Association Daljit Kaur said the fifth annual event is held every year in November.

Kaur, senior business-financing major, said SSA decided to put on the event because events like International and Cultural Night do not show cultural dances from India. “Nobody else does a cultural night showing India,” Kaur said.

Vice president of SSA and junior civil engineering major Amrit Badhesha said the event is put on to get the community together and to bring out the culture. “We want to give knowledge to the public to understand,” Badhesha said, “it’s just so people can get acquainted with Punjabis.”

Performers will showcase different dances from India. Badhesha said some groups will be putting on a skit, one will be doing a type of martial arts act and others will be doing cultural dances. Kaur said the event also has pop singer Sirpunj from India, who will be performing two songs at Punjab Night.

Top rated teams from different schools will perform at the three hour event. Some schools performing are Bakersfield, Irvine, Santa Barbara and Fresno City. Three of the teams are from Fresno State.

Cost for the event is $11 to the public. Kaur said the price went up $1 from previous years because the money will be going towards earthquake charity relief for those hurt in the Middle East.
