Three years ago a member of the community, a cancer survivor, approached the Women’s Resource Center and asked if there was any way to host a program on campus that could be used to raise money for cancer research and the Women’s Resource Center.
Because of Carla Jo Daikin’s plea, Fresno State will celebrate its third annual Lunafest film festival on Friday, Nov. 4. The event will feature eight films by women, for women and about women.
All proceeds for the event will go towards the Breast Cancer Fund and the Women’s Resource Center.
The center uses the funds to host programs such as Take Back the Night and V-day. These are events not covered by state funds and are to raise awareness about violence against women.
The Lunafest film festival is an event that travels to more than 60 locations nation-wide. While Fresno State is celebrating its third year hosting the event, Lunafest is celebrating its fifth year nationally.
The owner of Lunabar, a company that makes nutrition bars designed specifically for women, sponsors the festival. The University Student Union will also sponsor Friday’s event.
Domiona Sims, a member of the Women’s Resource Center, said the event is geared toward drawing attention to female filmmakers, cancer patients and women in general. Sims said the center is expecting between 700 and 800 people to attend the event.
The event will be held in the Satellite Student Union at 7 p.m. Advance tickets can be purchased at the USU box office. Students can attend for $8 in advance or $10 at the door and the general public can attend for $10 advance for $12 at the door.
