University High School is more than students think
In light of the recent articles in The Collegian, I would like to clarify some perceptions concerning University High School.
University High School is not an outside organization that has forcibly imposed itself upon the University. UHS was conceived, planned and developed by the university as the goal of a vision that encompassed four years of careful planning. It is a child born of this vision and stands as a testament to the university’s dedication to quality education, and its commitment to educational reform.
University High is an intrinsic part of the university, and an example of effective educational practice. The Governor’s Office of Charter School Development and Educational Reform held a conference on the Fresno State campus September 22 specifically because of the success of University High. It has become a model for the development of similar schools at UC Merced, Stanislaus and other universities and school districts throughout California.
Several sites on campus were explored and ultimately abandoned before the amphitheater was selected by Fresno State. We have spent nearly $700,000 on the plans for a site-specific building to be located there. This design has won a number of architectural awards and will enhance its location.
There are benefits to having UHS on the campus of Fresno State. College students use the opportunity UHS provides to complete observation hours for education courses. The recognition UHS generates brings attention to the university and is a source of pride for the campus.
UHS has made strides building our relationship with the university and will continue to strive to be a good neighbor with Fresno State.
