AS Finance Committee to review funding policy

The Associated Students Finance Committee will discuss Thursday whether it will grant retroactive funding to an organization after its event has taken place.

The discussion comes about two weeks after the committee denied the funding of $80 to the Buddhist Students for Peace through Dialogue’s “Gandhi Tribute, Candlelight Vigil and Garlanding Ceremony” on Oct. 2 because the committee received the funding request four days after the event occurred, committee chair Esmeralda Santos said.

“It was a great event but the event already took place by the time we reviewed it,” Santos said. “If we start making exceptions, we have to be consistent with the other organizations.”

The committee of Santos and five voting members also wants to push organizations and clubs to abide by the AS funding guideline, which says “applications must be submitted to the Associated Students’ office no less than six weeks prior to an event/program. They may be submitted up to one year in advance of the event/program.”

“They turn it in only a couple days before and we don’t have time to review,” Santos said, “so this is very important for the committee to review.”
