“Make A Difference Day”
is a nationally recognized day that falls on the fourth Friday in October.
The idea is simple: give up your normal schedule for a day to volunteer
to help out and make a difference in someone else’s life or in your
community.
This year the city of Fresno, Volunteer Center of Fresno and Fresno State
are joining forces and urging students and student groups to volunteer
for Make A Difference Day on Saturday, Oct. 22 from 8 a.m. to noon.
The event begins with a kick-off activity at Fresno City Hall. After the
kick-off participants will go to their designated clean-up sites.
Projects include landscape clean-up at schools, parks, and medians surrounding
campus, trails, as well as cleaning around The Discovery Center is also
planned.
City council member Larry Westerlund’s office is coordinating with
Fresno State to schedule clean-up projects near campus so transportation
is not an issue for students who want to participate. Service hours can
be set up to accommodate school and work schedules.
The deadline to sign up is Thursday, Oct. 20. For more information or
to register to volunteer, call Rene Delport in the Civic Engagement and
Service Learning office at 278-7063 or e-mail her at [email protected].
Volunteers must be at least 16 years old.
