Purple, the new color of relief

A purple box might not seem like much, but to a hurricane victim or just a regular person in need, it looks like an opportunity to receive some much needed winter clothing.

Student Association Gerontology Education (SAGE) has placed purple boxes in the Psychology and Human Services building, the University Student Union, the Education building and the dorm atrium.

These boxes offer students a chance to donate their old coats and jackets for Goodwill.

Goodwill is offering a voucher program for those affected by the hurricanes. Victims can receive vouchers from Goodwill stores across the nation and use the set amount of money on the voucher to purchase clothing for the up coming winter season.

But hurricane victims aren’t the only ones who will benefit from clothing donations. Anyone in need of winter clothing can go to a Goodwill facility and purchase the donated clothing.

“We heard about the other campus organizations making plans to help hurricane victims and we wanted to help too,” SAGE president Elsa Ruiz said. “We decided to take a different approach so we went to different relief organizations including Red Cross who told us to talk to Goodwill.”

SAGE is a group that formed to support and further the education and understanding of the unique need for individuals knowledgeable in the field of aging and who are competent to work with the elderly. But in this case, the group decided to switch its focus to help those hit by the hurricane.

Ruiz said Kennel Bookstore donated boxes from the unloading station in the back and the Health Science and Gerontology Department office donated purple paper usually used to decorate bulletin boards.

The boxes are marked with the SAGE group’s initials and the Goodwill logo. She said they’re hoping to continue the effort through the end of the fall semester.

“It’s not much, but it’s something,” Ruiz said.
