Applying some hard-earned education

As a System and Applications
Analyst for Clovis Unified School District, Fresno State graduate Lynn
Rueter is doing something she likes and studied for.
Rueter earned her bachelor’s degree at Fresno State in 1989 and
had entered her field of study by the time she had graduated.
At 24 years old, Rueter graduated with a business degree in computer applications
and systems. It was the second degree she had received at Fresno State
in her seven years of study at the university.
Rueter earned her first bachelor’s
degree in five years and earned her second degree in two years.
Upon graduation Rueter said she got her first job at Famous Software as
a support technician and moved her way up to a programmer while she was
with the company.
After leaving the company she worked as a programmer for five years at
NetMaxum as a programmerand systems analyst.
“It was cool job working for NetMaxum,” Rueter said. She then
came upon her current job at Clovis Unified where she has been at for
a year.
Rueter said she got her first job when someone from Famous Software came
to one of her classes and announced the job opening. After hearing about
the job for the company she applied and remained there for 10 years.
Rueter’s first degree at Fresno State was in kinesiology with an
emphasis on exercise physiology. “I had a part-time job supporting
myself through school and I knew I had to get my masters or Ph.D in order
to stay in my first major,” Rueter said. Rueter said that was a
big reason why she decided to get her second degree.
A graduate from Madera High School, Rueter said students should be sure
they like the field they go into. “Students should try to get an
internship before they graduate and get exposure,” Rueter said.
She said some people will get a degree in a certain field and then when
they get into it they hate it.
“Resume skills are important too, make sure you have experience
in that job,” Rueter said.
Rueter said she often notices people turn in resumes but have no experience
for the specific job they are applying for.
“Brush up on your interview skills and make sure you know something
about the company before the interview,” Rueter said.
