The Fresno State women’s
soccer team battled through regulation play and two overtime periods to
a 0-0 stalemate against Cal State Bakersfield Sunday afternoon.
Each team took only two shots on goal in the first period of play. The
Bulldogs’ greatest scoring opportunity came from the foot of forward
Cortney Sobrero, who took a shot on goal that hit the post.
Sobrero’s three shots
were all on goal, contributing to the team’s 15 total shot attempts.
The Bulldogs had eight total shots on goal.
“We didn’t finish our opportunities,” said goalkeeper
Angie Larsen, who had three saves. “We dominated the game so this
tie is tough.”
Second half play started swiftly with the Bulldogs firing off four shots
in the first five minutes. They went on to take a total of 15 shots over
the Roadrunner’s six.
“We could have done better but we never did give up,” said
defender Aubrey Tennant. “They played well but we were better.”
About 20 minutes remaining in the period, Sobrero made a cross in front
of the net to forward Antonea Lugo who was unable to get a foot on the
ball.
Lugo found opportunity with less than two minutes remaining when she got
her head on a cross that was caught by Roadrunner goalkeeper, Ashley Witten.
Within a minute of Lugo’s attempt, forward Kortney Lewis took a
shot that went just wide to end regulation play.
“It’s just a matter of scoring for us, we definitely had opportunities,”
said Head Coach Steve Springthorpe.
In the first overtime period only one shot was taken by each team. Roadrunner
forward Moriah Neville had the first attempt from a shot off a cross that
went just wide of the goal.
The Bulldogs’ attempt came with only seconds on the clock when Lugo
took a shot from inside the box that went wide of the net.
The next scoring opportunity for the Bulldogs came halfway into the second
overtime period when a high shot by Lewis hit the crossbar and was cleared
by Roadrunner defenders.
With a little over a minute remaining, Koleen Anderson got her head on
a corner kick to no avail.
Both the Bulldogs and the Roadrunners committed 12 fouls.
“We had good possession and the keeper made good saves,” said
Springthorpe. “We just need to work on shooting and finishing.”
Fresno State has lost its last two games since coming back undefeated
from the UNLV Adidas Classic.
The Bulldogs, now 3-6-1, will go on the road face No. 5 Santa Clara on
Friday before beginning conference play Sunday against Nevada.
