Fresno State to award education doctorates

Beginning in fall 2007, Fresno
State and other selected CSU campuses will be offering programs for students
to obtain doctoral degrees in education, the chancellor’s office
said Thursday.
The legislation was signed by Governor Schwarzenegger and is the first
time the CSU system will be able to award doctorates since the system
was formed almost half a century ago. Currently the CSU system only offers
bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
“The legislation marks perhaps the most significant change in the
California State University’s role in the last four decades,”
said CSU Chancellor Charles Reed. “We are extremely grateful to
all of the supporters of this bill who understand the importance of creating
access to high-quality programs that prepare leaders for California’s
schools.”
The CSU system originated as a preparation for teachers so the opportunity
to offer education doctorates reflects the core values of the CSU system,
the chancellor’s office said.
“We are really thrilled with being able to offer our students one
more degree in higher education and we hope this is the first step in
many more doctorate offerings to come,” said Clara Potes-Fellow
of CSU media relations.
Fresno State students said this means they no longer have to leave the
area to pursue a doctorate in education.
“I have been thinking about a doctorate since I’m going to
be a teacher anyway, and this makes the decision so much easier,”
said liberal studies major Colleen Harris.
